A picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to the “W Road”!
This just may be the most unusual stretch of road you will ever see. Traveled daily by residents traveling up and down Walden’s Ridge the road has it own set of rules known as the W Road etiquette.

This road, which carries traffic up the eastern side of Walden’s Ridge from Mountain Creek Road in Red Bank, is named for the three switchbacks that form the shape of a “W” at the top of the ridge. The “W Road” was begun in 1890 to replace the old “corduroy road” used by early settlers moving cattle up and down the mountain and by both armies during the Civil War.
Initially there was a tollgate located at the top of the “W Road“ that was later moved to the home of James Conner, who continued to operate it until the 1880’s.
