Never judge a book by its movie – J.W. Eagan
McKay Books first started in a small house in Fayetteville North Carolina and opened the Chattanooga store in August of 1990 in a storefront beside Circuit City.
Six employees opened the store, one of whom still works for McKay Used Books!
Having outgrown the space the store moved to the McKay building which was an 18,000 square foot mecca for book and CD enthusiasts. In July 2009, McKay moved into it’s new building at 7734 Lee Highway just off of I75 in East Brainerd.
Having just moved my mom from North Carolina in August of last year, with many, many boxes of books, Patrice and I decided to check out McKay’s “free enterprise library”. The store boasts more than two miles of shelving and is categorized in a convenient system that makes browsing easy with categories that are subdivided and labeled to help you find just what you are looking for. Handy aisle guides are posted throughout the store as well.
Our first order of business was to turn my mom’s books into “gold” with the McKay system. On our first visit, we learned the protocol and learned there is an element of trust required as you turn over boxes of books and media with nothing more than a smile. With a U-Haul full of books, we knew that we would be back so we took our small “bookmark” and left. Long story short, McKay was prompt with return call informing us of both the cash and “exchange” value of the trunk loads of books we delivered.
If you have a need for a hard to find title, McKay is a great resource because the store inventory changes daily…literally depending on who brought what title in.
Today, we were driving down I75 from a visit with our son John who is deploying to Turkey with the Air Force on Tuesday and Patrice reminded me that we have $70 in McKay Bucks that we still need to spend!
