“I Drove to WLYS, I Stopped, I Shopped till I Dropped!
You most likely have experienced either a yard sale, tag sale, estate sale, garage sale, moving sale, or something else, most everyone has attended at least one in their lifetime. But unless you’ve attended the World’s Longest Yard Sale (WLYS), you have no idea what you’re in for over the four days from Thursday August 5 thru Sunday August 8.
When discussing the total length of the World’s Longest Yard Sale you never know who to believe but one thing is for sure, it’s a sale like no other. What began in Jamestown, TN in the 80′s, the WLYS now stretches from Hudson, Michigan south to Gadsen, Alabama for a total of 675 miles of bargains, bargains and more bargains. Each year this bargain hunter’s delight kicks off on the first Thursday in August and concludes four days later on Sunday.
The Hamilton County portion runs right through Signal Mountain on Hwy 127, Taft Highway and then wind it’s way up Lookout Mountain Parkway.
The road is 2 lane almost all the way and you will find vendors on every turn and large grassy spot beside the road. The selection is unique every year and you are sure to find a treasure. Part of the fun is dickering on price for the one “must have” item.
In addition to the WLYS, this year the Signal Mountain retailers and businesses will be conducting sidewalk sales to clear out seasonal merchandise offering all kinds of bargains.
If you’ve never been before, here’s what you need to know. Make sure you bring your camera, tape measure, sunglasses, a good pair of walking shoes, and plenty of cash – you’re in for the World’s Longest Yard Sale!
You’ll see lots of food vendors along the route, selling everything from beans and cornbread in a church parking lot to mouth-watering BBQ right off the smoker, not to mention “carnival food” like funnel cakes, cotton candy and candy apples.
Some of the eateries on Signal that will be open include Southern Star, Sweet Gipsi, 517 Subs, Guthrie’s, Nino’s Pastaria, Lynn’s Market, Pruett’s and assorted carryout locations for chinese, mexican and pizza.
If you want it and can afford it… if it will fit at least partially in your truck or trunk… buy it! With the traffic, you will not have much opportunity to go back to fetch the item.
Make sure you wander off the beaten path when in town to see what the neighbors have cleaned out of their garages and attics.

We went to Signal Mt. last year, took the pit and sold Texas BarBQ. Out of over 900 customers, we had one complaint. Chopped beef brisket instead of sliced. We will definitely be back there this August. Had a BLAST!
