No matter how well you know each other you will get wet in the boat but there is nothing wrong with that in the middle of July!

The Dragon Boat Festival in Chattanooga will take place in conjunction with the USDBF Club Crew National Championships featuring three days of competitive racing.

Patrice and I jumped on the Keller Williams Realty team last year and had a blast being part of a team practicing and racing for the top prize but the real winners are the children treated at T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital. Last year, paddlers from 49 teams locally raised more than $93K in pledges for the organization.

National Club Crews will race 200, 500 and 1000 meters from July 23-25. Festival and Nationals teams will race 200 meters on Saturday, July 24. Festival teams will look to capture the Grand Champion title. National Championship division winners will take a piece of a $10,000 purse.

Teamwork and synchronization if critical

The boats are traditional 41′ long Hong Kong style dragon boats with 20 people in the boat, 10 on each side. A drummer sits in front of the first two paddlers and beats a drum to set tempo and pace. In the back is a “stand up” person who steers the boat with a long rudder so that the 20 paddlers simply concentrate on providing the locomotion.
