You can fill a photo album, the scenery is amazing!
Located on the western edge of Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon State Park is one of the most scenic parks in the state, offering rugged outcroppings, waterfalls and beautiful scenery.
The park straddles a deep gorge cut into the mountain by Sitton’s Gulch Creek, that meanders 800 feet at the bottom to approximately 2,000 feet at the rim of Cloudland Canyon.
The most spectacular view into the canyon is found near the picnic area parking lot; however, additional views can be found along the various trails that range from almost 7 miles to the 2 mile Waterfall Trail which we hiked today.
Hardy visitors who hike to the bottom of the gorge (including a 600-step staircase) will find two waterfalls cascading over layers of sandstone and shale into pools below. note: The park doesn’t allow wading or swimming for your own safety!
3,485 acres of Cloudland Canyon State Park (known as Sitton’s Gulch prior to 1939) offers plenty of options for overnight or week long trips that include Tent Camping, RV, Walk-in sites, Backcountry camping, Pioneer camping, cottages and a lodge for groups up to 40.
A couple of the cottages are “dog friendly”. We have never camped here but the facilities seem to be top notch and very clean. Reservations recommended for all the facilities.
Picnics seem to be happening everywhere on this beautiful day. There is a large playground and plenty of grass space for kids of all ages.
The park also has tennis courts, a disc golf layout, small store and a pond for fishing after Labor Day.
