Today, we are at the airport to pick up our son Jake coming in from Iraq for some R&R. The past several weeks have all pointed to this arrival with much uncertainty around his arrival.
The war winding down, the recent volcano that was disrupting air travel throughout the world and leave that has to be accelerated for many GIs had contributed to, on again, off again plans.
On Wednesday we got the word that he was on the move.
First from his FOB (forward operating base) in Iraq to Balad, from Balad to Kuwait where he would sit and wait to hear when the flight to either Germany or Ireland would leave.
Among servicemen, there is a joke, you get to Kuwait and u wait.
Jake described the 24 hours in Kuwait as, “like being in a blow dryer”. Yesterday morning we heard that he was headed for Germany and would be arriving in Atlanta sometime early today, Saturday. Jake’s wife, Priscilla had arrived as well as Danielle his sister and boyfriend Caleb.
While we were waiting, we met mother Vickie Millett who has a son that has enlisted and will be joining the Army in a couple of months.
Parking at the Airport is convenient and affordable–it takes only a few minutes getting from the parking lot to the ticket counter. The Short-term lot, adjacent to the terminal is very convenient and close. We were in the terminal in just a few minutes with very little wait as the plane was on time.
Chattanooga Airport is very convenient and unless we are traveling somewhere served by Southwest we book our travel to and from Chattanooga. The combination of location, parking cost and short lines make it an easy choice.
An added benefit to business travelers which came in very handy today is the free WiFi.
