Chattanooga’s Legal Street Party, Monday June 14, 2010!
The legendary Bessie Smith Strut is a free downtown event that features live Rhythm & Blues music along Martin Luther King Blvd. It’s known as the largest block party where Chattanoogans come together and everyone gets along.
Lots of fun, food and great blues, jazz and dance. Come hungry and enjoy the wide selection of barbecued pork, beef, turkey legs and seafood.
Otis Taylor will mix jazz and bluegrass with the blues to focus on the hardships of life, especially as an African-American will be on the stage at Bessie Smith Hall at 5 p.m.
At 5:15 p.m. Eric Steckel will play on Stage III. Steckel started out as a child prodigy, and has played with the likes of John Mayall, James Armstrong, Solomon Burke, Johnny Lang and Derek Trucks.
Scott Holt will take the Bessie Smith Hall stage at 6 p.m. and continue the layers of blues flavor thanks to Buddy Guy who took him under his wing, just as Muddy Waters and Otis Rush did for him. He takes this lineage very seriously, and plays from the heart every time—referring to playing as a “supreme form of prayer.”
Soul Rebels will blend Mardi Gras funk, jazz, and reggae with a hip-hop edge to bring audiences into a frenzied party atmosphere on Stage III at 6:45 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m. on the Bessie Smith Hall stage, Guitarist Kenny Neal will take you back to the bayou with a unique swampy brand of blues. Kenny Neal is the son of harmonica player Raful Neal, and grew up immersed in music. Legends Slim Harpo and Buddy Guy greatly influenced his development and what you will dance to on Monday night!
Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes!
